The Miracle of Mushroom Spores

Scientists have known at least 70,000 species of fungi, but there are things you just know not long ago, which mean the fungus releases spores into the air. Scientists from Miami University in Ohio reveal how the fungus releases spores in the video.

Fungi can release spores at speeds up to more than 100 kilometers per hour in just a short time. That was a mystery to scientists.

Some fungi using cavitations - similar to what happens when a soda bottle is opened. Imagine the mushroom stems with spore fungus on it and lump filled with water. When the mold dries, the water evaporates in the lump, lower pressure. The decline in pressure makes the water around the cells evaporates into a gas and go into the lump that had shrunk. Gas makes bump expands rapidly, sending spores into the air.

"We found out after recording the mushrooms with a camera that can record 1 million images per second," said Nicholas Money, professor of botany from Miami University. Assisted by his students, Money took 10 pictures that show off the movement of fungal spores. Without cameras, this release invisible spores.
